Since the construction in 2007 of a parking lot behind St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church in Netcong, NJ, dozens of glacial boulders have been unearthed.
They were deposited there at the terminus of the Wisconsin Glacier about 27,000 years ago. Many disparate sizes, species and colors of glacial boulders are present and represent a treasure trove of freshly exposed geological specimens.

A short written account of the site may be viewed on-line in the geology section of About.com. A three-part chronicle about growing up on the terminal moraine in Netcong is available from the author, as e-mail attachments, to those who are interested.

"On site are pink and green tinged granites, gneiss, limestone, shales, gneiss, quartzite and conglomerate."

Pretty. Most people don't notice.

I like rocks. I've always been kind of geeky, though.
