if you do not do expedited service it takes 6-8 weeks. You can pay an additional fee for a rush which I think brings that to 4-6 weeks. If you really want it rushed you can go into NYC and get them the same day.

I just got a new passport using the expedited service and I received it in about 3 weeks. If you go today you will not have a problem. Just do it at the post office and let them take the picture. Very easy process. Make the appointment with the post office. Fill out the application. Bring your birth certificate. Pay money. Wait 3 weeks. You're all set.

Ditto for my recent renewal, but I am pretty sure renewals are processed much quicked than 1st time issued passports.

actually mine had lapsed more than 5 years after expiration, so I think it was handled like a new passport! but maybe not from a processing standpoint, IDK.

Go now and you should have no problem and won't have to pay for expedited service.

There was a real backlog a couple years ago when they expanded the number of countries that you needed a passport for (instead of just diver's license).

Basically it depends on the volume of applications the office has. Non-expedited usually go to the New Orleans, LA, office and will take between 5-8 weeks. If you pay for the expedited service, you will get it sooner, usually about 3 weeks.

FWIW, if you need your passport in order to obtain a foreign visa (which I don't think you need for travel on vacation to Ireland, but I can't be certain), you can spend a day in Philadelphia at the Customs Building and get it right there. For more info on this option, check out Schedule an Appointment at the Philadelphia Passport Agency
