Do all main line and bergen line trains from Hoboken stop in Glen Rock? My son in going to school in Hoboken and new to taking the train. He thought that he was on the right train and even asked if it stopped in Glen Rock. He was told that it did. It didn't stop in Glen Rock but did stop in Ridgewood.

No, they don't all stop in Glen Rock, although the majority of them do. Also, remember that Glen Rock has TWO train stations. The line splits after Ridgewood into the Main and Bergen Lines, and Glen Rock has a station for each.

Sorry he was given the wrong info, though! He should carry the schedule with him so he can check next time and not rely on someone else.

every train going North except for the Metro-North express should stop at one of the two Glen Rock station. The Metro-North express is a special service that the state of NY gives to residents of NY state to give them easier access into and out of the city. Basically they make stops in Rockland county and NYC/Hoboken/Secaucus, but skip most of NJ.

It shouldn't matter which Glen Rock station you stop at (unless you're REALLY lazy), since they're just 2 blocks apart.

It's possible your sun stopped at the other station than he's used to and didn't realize that that stop was indeed Glen Rock

Its not a special service , its an Express train. Every Bi-state has a skip state service.....none of the Northern network goes to NYC only Hoboken.

potato, pot-ah-toe. The point is it's there for the sake of NY residents. OP just needs to know that it's those express trains that will skip most of NJ and go straight to/from Rockland County

Again, you're getting technical. Once you're in Secaucus or Hoboken, access to NYC is no problem. The PATH runs every 20 minutes, there's also the ferry in the morning. And in secaucus, there's the train that goes to NYC Penn Station. EVERY train line in the state has that connecting service, and they all go to Hoboken if you sit and stay on your same train. So you'll always be within a short amount of time of going to any of these three places.

This is not accurate at all. They skip certain spots, but they still go to the majority of towns.

Well this is not accurate either , although while Port Jervis line is currently suspended it is called the Suffern line temp. But what most people don't understand is some of these skip stop services are in place for another 100 years due to old Railroad contracts. Different Railroads built our regional network and to prevent one from stealing the other ones business , contracts compelling them to a skip stop service in the others territory. This can be seen with Metro North's New Haven line , it only makes one stop on the Harlem line and thats at Fordham.

Yup , in 3 or 4 phases over the next 3 decades. It and the Bergen - Passaic LRT were put on hold , so all that is happen now is the Northern Branch LRT. Its part of a 30 Billion $$ Rockland , Bergen , Passaic , Orange County Transit and Highway improvement plan. It also includes Bus Rapid Transit or an Express Bus along I-287 in NY , NJ 4 , NJ 17 , NJ 3 and 208. All of the projects will have a combined 400-600,000 Daily Riders mostly on the Bus systems but at least 140-160,000 Rail Riders. Everything should be done by 2040 , but its hard to say what when. NJ 4 and NJ 17 upgrades seem to have stalled and NIMBYS are gearing up to fight it , NJ 3 have slowed and there questions whether it will be done before 2014. I-287 BRT / CRT lines is in question , although this decade things might accelerate , there are questions about the High Cost of the whole project. The Bergen - Passaic LRT has received alot of flack from the towns it does not serve , those towns have now pushed to be included. So that project is on hold , they wanted to redevelop the abandoned factories and warehouses into Dense Housing and Retail , Hackensack also complained about a lack of transfer between the line and the PVL. Aside from those issues which can easy be fixed everything else going along great , theres just no timetable.

Interesting! Never thought I'd see passenger service on such a heavy freight line I've been railfanning on since I was 7. Would it serve any Bergen County communities along its run to the stateline?
