You can try driving or taking the 871/874 buses to the Morristown train station. From there, catch the train to NY Penn Station (you may have to change at Newark Broad Street, but it's an easy transfer).

Once at Penn Station, take the Bronx-bound (1) to 77th Street/Broadway.

Is this a commute or a one-time deal? If it's a commute, you can get a monthly pass on the NJT train and ride the buses to/from the Morristown station for free.

The schedules are here:

http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/rail/R0040.pdf (Morris and Essex Line schedule)

FAIL OP wants a practical trip. 871/874 are INFREQUENT!!!!!!!! BUT 874 will be good for transfering to NJT 197 BUT 874 cuts off early. lakeland bus is DIRECT and quick train is slow and that plus local bus cmon you know better!!!!!! one problem willowbrook got flooded the most practical and speedy way will always be lakeland bus PLUS THEY ARE CROSSHONORING STILL NJT and lakeland due to flooding.

(2) the next stop is 72nd which is 5 easy blocks from 77th. there is NO subway stop at 77th the nearest stop is 79th (1) but (1) is infrequent compared to the express

don't know about the bus but if the bus you take happens to get you to the port authority terminal, you can take the 1 straight to 79th street.

True, but all I know is NJT.

In any case, the (1) is less frequent than the (2)(3), but it's not that infrequent. The OP could always take the (2)(3) to 72nd Street, walk to the back of the platform, and catch the (1) to 79th Street.
