People from my office go shopping at Newport all the time. I don't think anyone's ever had a problem. It's right smack in the middle of a business area.
I too used to walk home through it, at all hours of the night and early morning.
The mall is loaded with cameras and cops, 24/7. It would be incredibly foolish for anyone to attempt a crime there.
There is a "ghetto" element but it decreases by the day. The stores that attract those people are leaving, and being replaced by stores for the "yuppies."
When I first moved to JC in 2005, I did not like going to Newport Centre. However, through the years it has gotten exponentially better where now its just another mall.
I have lived and worked near the Newport Mall for a number of years and have never had a problem. As far as the shooting that was on the Path train and could have happened at any stop. After all Jersey City is a urban area stuff is going to happen. My opinion is that is safe area.
