While at the Ridgewood Duck Pond today, I couldn't help but notice across from me a guy who had just parked his new Lexus and tried to be nonchalant about putting the keys on the front drivers side tire. And off he went, jogging.
The park was packed so clearly, he didn't care if it was stolen or not- not that much happens in that area-
All I kept thinking ... how funny if I "moved" it to another spot, took the keys and put them on a different tire, or put the keys in his car, locked the door and left a note, "Found these outside, didn't want anyone to steal your beautiful car" .... Instead, I went on my way because karma is a *****.
I'm not that trusting ... do you ever do things like that~ such as leave your doors unlocked at night, or hide keys outside the house in a not-so-hard to find spot ??
No, I do not do that. I understand Ridgewood is a safe area and the risk for auto theft is low, it still could happen. In my hometown of Oakland, someone a year or two ago left their unlocked car just for 10 minutes to go into the Krauzsers Convenience Store. After only 10 minutes in the store they came out and guess what??? It was GONE!!! This happened in OAKLAND! You can not really get anymore quiet than that in NJ. Especially for a Lexus, that guy needs to be more careful. Yes, I know in that area the risk is still relatively small, but, cars still get stolen (and burglarized) in Bergen County. Hence, perhaps you should've said something to that man who unnecessarily left his guard down.

This was most likely a bait car and the driver was an undercover cop. No one rich enough to afford a new Lexus would do something this stupid intentionally. I would not even consider doing that on my old Ford Escort. If this was not a bait car, the guy would have at least hid the keys if he did not want to jog with them.

Well, suppose I did it WITH you, then wouldn't the karma thing be halved?
No, I saw him go onto the trail - I don't think so ... why would they have those in "ridgewood". That's such a beautiful, upscale area.
Well, if I were a car thief, that's the kind of town I would go looking in to find a nice car to steal. Plus, at the Duck Pond, you can drive away and be on 17 or the Parkway before a cop is even going to get the report.
I hate to break it to you but this is a fairly common practice, in fact a lot of valet parking garages do this.
Besides, not that the guy was looking to have his lexus stolen, but I'm sure he has theft insurance. It's not like he left his kid sitting there, cars can be replaced.
ive seen many cars parked on long beach island with the keys in them. its nice that you have a place where people feel that comfortable doing that. i wouldnt do it though.
