We signed up for a new home in central Jersey.

We are not very keen on the fireplace upgrade as we have two young kids.

We plan to stay in this home for about 5 years and just wanted feedback on whether we should opt for a fireplace even though we may not use it.

We have gone in for all the upgrades like hard wood floors, granite countertops, stainless steel kitchen equipment, tile and jets in the master bath...

Would you buy a house without a fireplace if it had all the other features you looked for in your new home ?

Your feedback will help us to decide :-)

Why not have it? IT helps with a resale value, plus you never know, you might want to use it

If I found a house I absolutely loved and there was no fireplace- I would buy it.

However, you said you are going for all the upgrades so why not go for that to-help increase the resale. If you are worried about the kids-you don't have to use it.

I personally love fireplaces.....if you are upgrading everything else, why not add a fireplace, you never know you might end up loving it yourself

We have 2 fireplaces and this was not a problem when the kids were younger.

If you're really concerned with them playing with fire, might as well not get an oven or stove. I know I sound like an hardass, but we can't keep our children in bubble wrap.

Get it, especially here in the North East.
They are very cozy in late fall & winter

If you feel unsafe with the kids around just don't use it

Although I'm not a fan of fireplaces, and would not want one in a house I'm buying, I still say get it. I do see that everyone else likes them, so it will help resale. Especially if it's not your 'forever' house.

Personally, that's where the big screen goes. I know, I'm the oddball. But at least I'm honest. Give me credit for going against the grain.

Wow! This forum is great. I just bumped into it this morning and I thought it would be a great place to get feedback and so posted a query .. and Voila! great responses within 3 hours.

Thank you guys. I guess we will go in for now. I hope the builder will accommodate this upgrade at this stage while they are just about to dig.

When we first went to sign up, we said no to a fireplace upgrade without considering resale value. We had great plans of mounting a 50" LCD on that wall and making that the focus of the room. (All of us our TV addicts :-( )

Thanks again !

Someone even told me to make sure the fireplace is on when selling the house.

Makes a very nice show for the potential buyers if they never had one.
