Yes I looked up New Jersey Transit but it is a lot more expensive, and they still charge you something to park.

New Jersey still proudly sits in dead last on on my "favorite states" list.

Thanks for the quick answers!
New Jersey...where we hate you too.

And this is just the central part of the state. Ticket isn't as much as from Long Branch and you still save on tolls/gas.
Interesting, thanks!

(I pay $360 for a yearly permit at Little Silver.)

PLENTY of free parking in some states where there's nothing to do... perhaps they are higher on your favorites list.

Seriously OP, you are able to park in NJ and get round-trip PATH into Manhattan for a grand total of $11 and you are outraged? I really wonder what you expect to be doing in Manhattan if $11 is inhibiting your plans.

this.

and if the OP is from Delaware, he has no business talking - DE is the proud owner of the biggest toll ripoff in the US - charging $5 (if not more now) for those lousy 10 miles on 95.

The fact is land is too valuable to let it be wasted on free parking. Land owners can make a lot more developing condos or office space than parking decks. In order to make it worthwhile, you and other users have to pay into what it costs to develop and maintain the parking. I read somewhere that the cost to develop a parking deck works out to about $50,000 per space. For a landowner/developer/Port Authority, that's serious money for a 1,000 space parking facility.

Fact is, in a metropolitan area of 20 million, if you want one of the few thousand parking spaces close to Manhattan, you're going to have to pay something to occupy that spot.

An interesting read on the topic (the writer seems to sensationalize a bit, but there are truths here): Economic View - Why Free Parking Comes at a Price - NYTimes.com
