I am a single 38 old woman seeking an apartment within my budget ($1350/$1500 utilities included) that is close to shops, transportation and a place to park my car. I work in downtown Manhattan. It looks like Fort Lee may be a good fit. What are your thoughts? Linwood co-ops? Do you have any other suggestions?

According to CLR, the overall crime rate is low but the murder risk is a little high. According to city data, it is really low. Why is that?

Fort Lee is safe. I have never heard of many murders occurring there, and the only thing I can think of is that the statistics you read are possibly drug-related. As I'm sure you know, Fort Lee is the Jersey side of a famous bridge connecting NY and NJ, and unfortunately the down side of that is that the bridge is often used as an artery in transporting drugs to and from the city. Perhaps that would have something to do with any murder rate. I don't think that has anything to do with the town itself. It's not as though you have to be afraid walking down the streets of Fort Lee or anything.

My ex lives in Fort Lee, and our 20-year-old daughter stays with him sometimes. She walks around to shop and get her nails done and whatnot, and she has no problems.

It makes sense now.

The commute is not really that bad. I estimate it would be 1hr and 15 minutes.

Thank you.

Enjoy! Go to In Napoli for dinner. Good food, nice owners.

I envy you your proximity to my all-time favorite museum--The Cloisters, which is the medieval collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Just over the GWB and then north--you'll be there in 15 - 20 minutes. The grounds are beautiful, too. It's really easier to get to from that part of NJ than it is from within most of Manhattan.

I commuted over the GWB to Somers, NY from Ridgefield, NJ for over 1 year before moving to Peekskill several years ago and I would leave my home around 6:50 am and be over the GWB in 15 - 20 min. easy from Ridgefield - regardless of traffic. If you live in those areas you will learn the back roads to the bridge entrances and avoid the traffic leading to the tolls. Once through the tolls and the merge, it's fairly smooth sailing at rush hour, provided you're not staying on 95. The only time there were issues was if there was an accident on the GWB, which was not very often.

6:50 am is not really rush hour...it's still early, and it will take more than 15 min by car to drive from fort lee to DOWNTOWN manhattan. for example for my drive there is a difference if I leave at 7:00am and 7:20 am. Just 20 min can change everything.

Yeah don't worry about crime rate. You need to worry more about motor vehicle accident rate...ton of traffic that constantly flow through the area.

It will be a long commute to downtown Manhattan because you'll probably take the bus then transfer to MTA and it'll probably be 3 hour round-trip commute on daily basis on average. Sometimes it'll be less, some times it'll more due to traffic. That said, you can find a place in Fort Lee within your budget without much problem and Fort Lee has good downtown area. Especially if you enjoy ethnic foods. Also Great Park near by (Palisades Interstate Park) at River Road.
