We've sold our house in Rockland county NY and will be moving into Bergen County NJ (for better schools) in the next few weeks. My wife and I have narrowed it down to Montvale NJ or Mahwah NJ partly because of their lower taxes. We have 2 young boys, 8 and 4 years of age, we would like good schools, plenty of leisure activities, parks, restaurants, shopping etc. We are looking at buying a home in the $700,000-$750,000 range and would like a friendly neighborhood with other young families. Diversity is somewhat important but I accept that neither Mahwah or Montvale is too diverse : )
Which would you choose between Montvale or Mahwah, and why?
Any help would be greatly appreciated: )
Thanks in advance.

I would just go with my personal preference towards a house/neighborhood for the money rather then rule out either town completely

Thanks GiantaRutgersfan,
Do you feel the two towns are pretty equal?

yes. I would judge it on the house for the price. plus things like commute time to work, which is closer to friends/relatives, distance to a grocery store, distance to shopping, etc.

Mahwah has it's own HS, I think Montvale goes to Pascack Hills. If you like hiking and parks, Mahwah has much more to offer in that respect. It is much more spread out than Montvale.

I would also consider Allendale and Waldwick in that area which are smaller towns with good schools and nice little downtowns.

Thank you both for your great advice, it's much appreciated.
Spent some considerable time this weekend in both towns. Took the family to a grocery store, restaurants, parks and even the libraries in both towns and for some reason Montvale felt more homey and more welcoming. It also seamed to have a more close nit feel to it. Do you think this is so or just a coinsidence?

Thanks again!!!!

Mahwah spans a pretty big area and has a lot of neighborhoods. I remember it being pretty welcoming, but you should probably take it by a neighborhood by neighborhood basis.

I know of several Corporations (Mercedez NA being one of them), that call Montvale home. Does Mahwah also have a large corporate tax base? just curious.

Jaguar's North American HQ actually. I haven't seen the numbers first hand, but my understanding is it has a strong corporate tax base that helps keep residential property taxes down.

Mahwah actually has pretty low taxes and a lot of business as well.

Stryker, UPS, Okonite, TD Bank, Seico, Sharp, and a few others have large operations in town.
