That's not really what I meant - those laws should be and are enforced, maybe not enough (I actually know several people who got cell phone tickets). I meant it's more in the category of laws no one has any intention of enforcing, like these, which are also on the books in NJ:

4. Spray paint may not be sold without a posted sign warning juveniles of the penalty for creating graffiti.

3. All motorists must honk before passing another car, bicyclist, skater, and even a skateboarder.

2. It is illegal to delay or detain a homing pigeon.

Good luck trying to get an antsy pug or a wind in the face loving lab to sit still like a good "child" and wear a seat belt.

Please excuse me yet my question is.....Do we have to seatbelt the dog in the car? I have a two seat vehicle and travel with a child in the front seat and the dog in the hatchback area..(which is too small for a crate)

Do I need to create a safety hook in the trunk area to run a teathered line for the pup to wear a seat harness?

I don't believe driving with the dog on the drivers lap is a smart thing to do...so thats not what I do. I have the child in the front seat...the dog in the hatch area behind the front seats..

Will I get a ticket driving without the dog in a teathered harness?

Thanks in advance for any insight.

Click it or ticket. It’s not just for people anymore — at least in the Garden State. Police and animal control officers are authorized to cite drivers with unrestrained animals in the car. Yes, that includes the back of a pickup truck too. Violators can be fined $250 to $1,000 per offense.

What about helmets? Does your pet have to wear one? How about a pair of goggles?

i think this is a media-inflicted controversy. everyone i know on FB in jersey is posting about it too, and no one has any clue on whether or not it's actually illegal.

maybe, in theory, it is under the vague law some here have referenced. Maybe it has been enforced in a rare circumstance where someone's fifi sitting in their lap caused an accident or something...but i bet it's a whole lotta nuttin.

Make sure you give your cell phone to the pooch also.

"officer it was the dog talking on the phone not me"

My dog probably drives better than many NJ motorists.
