I'm doing a little research for a friend. Her husband has taken a job in Linden, NJ. She and her six-year-old daughter are staying up here in CT for a year (he'll rent something tiny down there), then they hope to sell their house and move down. Their biggest priority is a good school system. Seems he'd be willing to do any commute under an hour, of course shorter is better. They aren't having any more kids and aren't looking for a particularly large house, just a good town. I think budget is under $400K and maybe depending on what they can get for their current house, they might be more in the $350 range. Are there any towns that will meet their criteria?

The first town that comes to mind is Cranford. Plenty of housing stock in their price range and the schools are good. The commute will be short and easy too. Good place for the hubby to look for a small rental for the time between when he starts work here and when the family can join him.

First thing that came to mind for me as well. Could look at Scotch Plains and Clark as well.
Definitely Cranford. Borders Linden and its high school is 13th in the state, I believe that is best in the county. Cranford has great schools. The only issue is affording Cranford. Not quite as expensive as Westfield, for example, but it's definitely wealthier and more expensive than average.
Cranford but just watch that you are not buying a house in a flood zone
