Is it a safe town? quiet? demographics? Does it flood? Saw a couple of homes online and wondered if it was worth checking out.

Fairly safe I think. Some, very few probably, houses may be over or near o;d mine shafts. That part and most of Morris County is usually fine otherwise.

Mine Hill is a nice town...a bit more "blue collar" than most of the rest of Morris County, but definitely safe. As previously mentioned, it is situated above what had been an extensive mine, which has long since been abandoned. Sadly as a consequence it is not unusual to have troubles with sink holes...in fact it is so common that state legislators have requested and received federal aid to help address the ongoing problems with them. (IIRC the school had to close their playground recently due to a sink hole) If I were considering a home in the area, I'd insist on having some ground sonar studies done. Mine Hill has a k-6 school system, which is well regarded, but they send to Dover for 7th through 12th, a school system that is mediocre at best. (the latest NJ Monthly ratings of HS has Dover at 220 out of 322 in the state.) There is no real downtown, and for shopping you'll have to go to elsewhere, typically nearby Roxbury or Dover (even for groceries).
