Hello Jersey-folk....

So through a strange twist of fate, my wife has been offered and accepted a job in Manhattan. Unfortunately, as I'm a grad student I won't be able to join her down there right away. She'll rent a room for a while until I come down and then we'll get an apartment. I see a lot of reasonably priced rooms in Journal Square and was wondering if you can help me. I've been to that area of Jersey City several times and never felt unsafe, but my question is, "Is Journal Square safe for a small Indian woman whose over protective husband won't be there to walk her home from the PATH station?" Currently we live in Cambridge, MA and have had very few problems other than the usual drunken fighting at the T stop. It doesn't bother us because it rarely affects us. I just want to know that my wife will be safe.

Also...are the locals gonna give me **** for wearing my Celtics hat everywhere?

If she will only rent a room, why not rent at Newport? 1bd shares in a 3bd apartment in the older Newport buildings is ~$700-900 a month inclusive.

At the time she's down there, we're going to be paying for two apartments: one up here in Mass and the other down there. We're considering Newport or maybe Hoboken for when I move down there later this year.

There is no way you can find a 3 bedroom older unit for below 1200 in Newport or East of 78....maybe in Journal SQ or the Heights but that's a stretch....

Yeah, Newport doesn't sound realistic unless she's sharing a bedroom. Which lots of single Indians there do, but doesn't sound like your situation.

Journal Square is fine as long as long as she's not out really late at night or something, which also sounds unlikely.

The locals won't care about a Celtics cap because they're mostly recent Indian or Puerto Rican or other Asian or Hispanic immigrants.

I know plenty of single females and single males splitting 3 bd shrs and paying well under $1000 a person. Each has their own bedroom, the person in the master bedroom with own bathroom pays more (like $1300) so the other two can be under $1000. I'm not saying the entire 3bd is below $1200, that YOUR room will be under $1000.

If you are an over-protective husband, that's the safest way to go. When you move down, you can always rent an apartment in Journal Square or wherever together.

Believe me New Jersey is really safe from minorities point of view and especially places in "the center" that business districts are. I know cuz I am Polish and I look and dress like one almost every day( or so I hear time to time but always from "my people".lol.), hence minority and work in different areas of New Jersey. You know all "Poles Jokes"....never heard one from person I've met "in person"...

I would recommend also that you should look into the Heights, there are SO many transportation options to and from JSQ and Grove St from there you will have no difficulty.

Thanks for all of your help. We've seen some rooms for about $600 a month in Journal Square. At this point in time, we're thinking about safety and proximity to the PATH. I'll be going down there with her in two weeks to check out places. We'll see what's possible.
