since the one thing everyone here agrees on is the property taxes are insane here, what are your solutions to lower them? Keep in mind what gets funded with those taxes, what is the solution to make sure what is getting funded will still be??

For starters all though it will NEVER happen as they have a strangle hold on NJ..get rid of NJEA
Then knock off this Abbott school thing
several of my friends are teachers (and I will be next year) and all but one complain about the salaries not paying enough. The one who doesn't complain is in the elementary system but she has her Phd.
is this because teacher's salaries are too high? what about the NJEA causes our taxes to rise? this is a serious question, i don't know.
Not so much the teacher's salaries.lord knows they certainly earn it...it's administation and upper level that is out of control
Take my town Jefferson we have 1 HS, 1 MS and I think 4 or 5 elementary
each having a principal the HS has two Vice principals the the BOE and their ridiculous salaries and each town in Morris county has a superintendent of schools...c'mon I can see say Jersey City with all the schools they have having their own BOE & superintendent but it's not needed in the burbs.

i agree that consolidation would help cut the fat - most states have some sort of consolidated districts. but is this something the NJEA doesn't want?
I don't think it's the NJEA exactly, but rather a function of how the school districts are set up by town. The first thing to do would be to consolidate services amongst towns, perhaps at a county level- this applies not only to the schools, but also police, fire, etc. While some of the larger towns may stand on their own (like Newark, Jersey City, etc), alot of the little boroughs, hamlets, etc., could be consolidated, thereby eliminating alot of redundant positions.
As an example, the majority of the schools down here in GA are organized by county. In my county, there are approximately 36,000 students in 39 schools, all under the supervision of one superintendent of schools, one business administrator, one personnel director, etc. If you looked at some counties in NJ, you'll find a similar number of students spread over a dozen or more school districts, which means a dozen or more superintendents, BA's, personnel directors, etc.- all of that redundancy means redundant salaries for these high-paid positions.
Now do the same thing with the fire department- instead of 12 fire chiefs, 12 haz mat response teams with their 12 sets of specialized equipment that barely (if ever) gets used, etc., take that and roll it all up on the county level. Do the same for police, building departments, tax assessors, and so on, and you'll cut alot of the tax burden you're currently experiencing.
Of course, none of this will ever happen, since no politician will ever commit the political suicide of suggesting such a thing, nor would the various unions and representative agencies ever let their supporters consider such a meaure.
One day when I've nothing to do I will get on line and list each school district in Morris County alone..consolidation would save money to put back in the schools....I also believe the buses in addition to the driver should have an aide..part timer to deal with the hooligans on the bus and let the driver just worry about driving
Then list the salaries of the fat cats for each town...your head will spin
And again teachers I'm not referring to you...you are in the trenches with the kids of today..you earn your pay
NJEA is very powerful, my cousin stopped teaching and works for them full time. He's a good dude, busts his arse and earns his money. But when he was teaching he'd get bounced before tenure and had to start over. He finally had enough and fights for others now to make sure that doesn't happen to them.
Consolidation is definitely the key there. Is Jefferson that big that it needs 5 elementary schools?
