I commute to NYC (midtown/Grand Central, just over an hour's commute now) and my spouse commutes to the Newark area (about half hour commute from where we are now). We're currently paying about $1800 (likely going up) for a very nice 1 bd apartment (doorman, pool, W/D in apt etc). We had moved here from California so we do not know Jersey well.

Would love to get your suggestions for ideas on locations with similar apartments with a lower rent, where we could both still have a fairly easy commute--less is even better, of course! While public transit is preferred, we are not opposed to getting a car, but in that case, would like to avoid paying extra for parking. No kids yet so schools not priority although certainly ideal so we won't have to move again down the line. Safe neighborhood, easy shopping for essential groceries, walkable area etc would be important.

Any thoughts/suggestions? Many thanks all!

To be perfectly honest, and blunt, you will not find another place with a luxury 1 bd apt complete with doorman, pool, W/D in apt, and a 1 hr commute to NYC for less than you are currently paying. Especially if you are also wanting parking. Perhaps it would be a good idea for you to take a look at this thread....//www.city-data.com/forum/new-j...ew-sticky.html

Thanks I know it is wishful thinking but was hoping could keep the 1 hour commute (which is OK and best one can hope) but perhaps pay a little less on the rent!

Yeah, if you're paying $1800 for a luxury 1BR 1 hour from midtown, you should probably be GIVING advice to others in this forum. That's a pretty good deal. Harrison Station might work; wouldn't cost any less but it would be a shorter commute.

Maybe you can evaluate if you really need all those amenities; if you can do without maybe the rent would go down a bit.

Take a day trip and visit Rutherford and Montclair.

Where are you now?

Sounds like what you have now is a good deal. Mind if I ask where?

I'd suggest Metuchen if you can do without the luxury.

The rent would be about the same in a modern apartment building in South Orange, but the commute to Midtown (and possibly to Newark) would be quite a bit shorter. Both of the following complexes are very walkable -- gourmet grocery store, restaurants, movies, etc.

Gaslight Commons in South Orange, NJ 07079 - The Bozzuto Group
The Avenue South Orange - City Living - Sterling Properties

I'd guess he or she has a good deal from couple year ago. Apartment I'm in now in JC was rented at 2000/mo 2 year ago and I'm paying 2400/mo. 5 min to Path station by foot, gym, floor to ceiling windows, 950+ sq ft, etc. Hot spots of JC are jacking up rental prices by 15-25% no joke, so I assume other hot spots are doing something similar and they can still get away with it because folks from city and brooklyn are pushed out so they are coming to NJ
