Hello! I'm currently relocating for a job in Bloomfield, NJ. My boyfriend currently works in Bronxville, NY. We're trying to find a (safe, affordable) place to live for a young couple just starting out, where each of our commutes would be under an hour (preferably closer to 30-40min), including traffic.

Originally we were considering Rockland County NY (Nanuet, Pearl River, etc.) to avoid the GW bridge traffic for him (he would be able to take the Tappan Zee). I would be taking the GSP down to Bloomfield. We're concerned, though, that the GSP will be a nightmare for me during rush hour.

Is it an accurate assumption that the GSP from Rockland County down to Bloomfield will be unmanageable during rush hour? Does anyone have any suggestions for decent places to live that would be as easy of a commute as possible?

I would appreciate any input you could offer. Thanks so much!

Believe it or not. You're going against traffic mostly. I used to commute from Rockland down to Montclair, so it's a couple of exits further. There'd be odd spots, but it generally took me no more than 40 minutes each way. Do get an EZPass though. You'll need it.

It should take about 1 hour each way. You might encounter traffic around exit 153 in both directions. Otherwise the commute seems to be OK. At worst, it could take an hour and 15 minutes.

I agree that you'll mainly be going against most traffic. I would estimate an average of around 40-45 each way (of course depending on where in Rockland and where in Bloomfield), with the possibility of 1hr or so on heavier traffic days.
