Hi All ,

I'm currently living in India. Would be travelling to Somerset, NJ to join my new company during January, 2014.
.
I need suggestions from you all regarding the cost of living and the best place to live around somerset.

Preferably if there are areas with Indian Groceries would be fine. I'm travelling as a family with infant.

Is there any public transport ? etc.,

There is not much public transport in suburban NJ. Some, but sparse. Most transport goes from towns to Newark and NYC. Saying that, you might need a car for efficient travel.

The Edison area is known for many Indian residents. There are probably others but that one comes forst to mind.

Public transport info such as buses would be on njtransit.com

Thanks for your info ! How about car pooling ?

- Average rental cost. Is there nice 1bhk apartments with $800 - $1000 range around such range.

It would help if the OP would clarify whether he is referring to Somerset County, NJ, or if he is referring to the, "town", of Somerset, which is actually a section of Franklin Township, in Somerset County.

Car pooling is yes or no. depends on where to where, in other words if someone is going your way or not.

Rental prices, you will have to check yourself or I am sure others will tell you since I personally have not rented anything in decades. However I think rentals might be higher than $800 to $1000??? I'm sure others will tell you that.

If you plan on living in Somerset, or anywhere in suburban NJ you're really going to need a car. My friend was just telling me the other day (she's Indian) that both Indian grocery stores in Somerset (the town) have closed in the past few months. Subzi - I believe the name was (of both, had 2 locations).

There's no public transportation that I know of that does local-local stops. I've seen buses on rt 27 and Easton Ave that have NYC/Edison/Bound Brook as their destinations, but your best bet is to look at a bus schedule.

Where are you going to be working? You don't need to tell me the name of the company but an "area" would help me give you a better idea of what is available to you rental wise. Around Worlds Fair Drive? I don't know of any other area in Somerset where "big" named businesses are as concentrated and would be hiring from over seas, but I could be wrong.

A lot of the older apartment complexes in the area of Somerset and surrounding towns are "iffy". There are some new ones, but they're on the expensive side. You could check in to renting a condo from a private LL, as there are plenty of those in Somerset & surrounding towns.

Seeing as how you have an infant, I'd think about buying a used car to take baby to check-ups, get to the pharmacy, having some freedom when you have time off (not a lot of walkable downtowns - as in none worth anything). Groceries can be delivered from a major chain such as Stop and Shop or Shop Rite.

Feel free to PM me if you want, and I'll see if I can help you out.

Good Luck!

Thanks for your valuable infos. I would be working in davison avenue, somerset, nj. Inorder to take care of my baby i need to look after the best possible areas in terms of both location with accessibilities, moderate rent (for me its $800 - $1000) and travel time from work to home shud be less than 45 mins. I dont know if im looking something not possible but informations wud help me decide that.

If you want to expand your search based on budget, Piscataway would also be a good option. The area of Somerset you mention is itself very nice, well connected and all amenities nearby. Didn't know the Indian stores shut down, they were quite good. A car is a must.

Somerset County operates a shuttle that goes around the corporate campuses near Davidson Ave. during morning & afternoon rush. One shuttle serves the New Brunswick train station and goes up & down Easton Ave. The other serves Bound Brook station. Cost is cheap at $2 each way.

I've taken the shuttle from time to time and there are plenty of Indian immigrants who use it. A Bombay Express if you will. They seem to live in garden apts. in Somerset off of Easton Ave, Not sure what rent is there.
