Just heard a story about a friend of a friend, etc. etc. etc. who is an alcoholic, etc., and will soon be evicted from their apartment. What resources would a person like this have? I believe person didn't work, and from what I understand, had been living off the generosity (or stupidity) of a parent who recently died and left no assets. Thus, pension and social security ended. No home, so no equity in anything. Sometimes we just want to turn our backs when we hear stories like that, but with this horrible winter, what exactly happens to such a person? He lives in Bergen County, so that's where he would probably need to look.
Assuming he is physically capable and can get sober enough to work, he should get up real early every day and go to labor ready in Paterson. They pay daily. Next step would be to rent a room for cheap and search for a full time job. There are some boarding houses around where you can rent a (crappy) room for a few hundred bucks a month.
