No tax on food and clothing. Gas is less expensive. When you do have to pay tax, it is not 13%.

Once you get over the property tax shock, your day to day expenses might be a pleasant surprise.
This is also true.
I wanted to mention the sales tax thing, but didn't. I didn't even think of gas prices either! That's gonna be a pleasant surprise for you =)

Really. Most of us manage to survive on a hell of a lot less than $200k.

Unfortunately, there really are people like this out there who can't fathom living the way most ordinary working people live or even understand the snobbery regular people see in such a question.

There are also some people who live in other parts of the world and all they ever hear is that NJ is so expensive! I thought that this was a very fair question -- OP just wanted to make sure he could keep up a middle class lifestyle with the salary in the state that too many people complain about!

Perhaps. But the OP is from Toronto, not from far away. Someone offered a $200K salary is not stupid. Read between the lines. His question is really not about whether he can afford a middle-class lifestyle but whether it will be possible to be able to live out of sight of the lower-class beings he doesn't wish to interact with.

Thank you very much to all of you who replied. And no comment on the side conversation. it is just very sad that some people try too much to "read between the lines" and judge people based on a 3-line question. This merely was an honest question/concern that I had and thought I could share it here. Have a great day...

You'll be fine and can afford middle class lifestyle (where other areas it would be affluent). But one thing that I didn't see mentioned is the lifestyle you afford is based on what part of NJ you need to reside. NNJ is very different from Central and South. As you get closer to NYC, NNJ becomes more like a suburb of NYC... and COL does rise.

Perhaps I'm just cynical, but it made me wince, knowing how the majority of people in NJ support families on a quarter of what you're going to be making.

Have a great day yourself.

Yes, NJ's government is just as corrupt as theirs!
