When you work in NJ, and drive, its a whole different animal than taking public transit and walking.

I accepted a job in Midtown and don't know what new to expect, I've been many times, but always left tired due to extensive walking. So hear hear, what do you say? (I hope the question makes sense)

It's exhausting to some extent, but it also has its upsides. You don't have to sit behind a wheel in horrific traffic, or you can read or nap or just stare out the window while traveling to work because someone else is driving.

Been doing it for 35 years.

If it's the walking that is exhausting, then it should be a good way to build up a little endurance. Comfortable walking shoes can make all the difference too. For me (in good weather), the walking part of the commute is the most enjoyable part. Until you're used to it, it may not be just the walking, but dealing with figuring out where you're going and worrying about train schedule, etc... but those parts become easier pretty quickly.

As far as the overall difference... generally the commutes are longer; less stressful without having to deal with driving traffic, but there is no getting away from the overall time commitment.

There's a difference betwee spending a day in the City as a "tourist" walking around all day & going directly to your office.

Just aimlessly walking around the City all day can get exhausting. Getting off the train & sitting in an office less so.

It may depend on your health & how far you have to walk from the train to your office.

Many people wear sneakers on the commute & leave their "office shoes" in their desk at work.

When I commuted I always kept a small folding umbrella in my bag & was really to glad to have it handy on many days.

Carry a small bottle of water also, you'll be glad to have it with you.

Bring a book to read on the train & you'll be surprised how quickly the time can go by.

After sitting in the office all day I was always very happy to be walking to the train, even though it was a long walk. You may find that you feel better getting some walking in each day, rather than just sitting in the car.

The commute home after work is the worst part for me. Rushing everyday to Port Authority to get on a crowded bus is no fun. Traffic tends to be heavy and it takes a while for the buses to get through. Can seem like an eternity. But like many have said...it beats having to do the driving yourself.

After 2 years, I still haven't adjusted to it. I live in Brooklyn before and a quick R train from Battery Park ride tops 50 minutes I get home. Now it is such a struggle waiting on line for the Bus, getting home 1 1/2 hour and doing this again especially in the winter. My company usually give me the clients in North Jersey (audit) so when I'm finish I can get there with my own car and get home. If I had to do it again, I probably would be selfish to my kid and stay in Brooklyn or find better areas in NY (subway). Now with a loan in hand and probably a divorce with my wife to get back to New York. I am so depressed, just feel no way out. Anyway dont want to ramble on. Yes I'm exhausted mentally and physically.

I walked about a 1/2 a mile each way from the PATH on 33rd to 31st & Park Ave S. It went fast but a lot of times I found myself running the 1/2 mile to get the PATH train I needed for the last bus leaving Jersey City...at a ridiculously early 6:25 PM. NJ Transit's shortcomings are a WHOLE other thread,

Overall i hated commuting an hour and a half each way to NYC (and much longer in bad weather). Soul-sucking is the best way to describe it.

I do about a hour a day walking. 15 minutes to bus, 15 minutes from Port Authority to work, and then another 15+15 on the way home. Not bad at all. Just find something to do on the bus or train and you would be surprised how fast time goes. Not really tired from it. I think I would be more tired sitting in a car for an hour

Only if you are a fatty....or are afraid of crowds. Personally I find the crowds exhilarating. I hate driving and being stuck in traffic. With my iPad or a good book, I find the train ride is too short....but I quickly forget about the book when my wife surprises me at the train station with the kids.

I sounded more mean than I wanted to, but seriously walking is good for you. Over time you will build up your stamina...and if NYC doesn't grow on you, in a couple of years take a job in nj with your upgraded resume.

I live in central NJ and work out of NY 2-3 days a week. The walking is not exhausting at all.
