A friend of mine and his wife are moving to the US in order to start working in Jersey City. He's asking me about what neighborhoods he should look at, however I live in NYC and have no idea what to tell him.
Here's a little bit more about what he's looking for:
- 2 bedrooms
- under $2000 (is that even doable?)
- safe neighborhood. He and his wife are expecting a baby, so safety is very important to him.
- reasonable entertainment/dining options, but he'd rather live in a safe area than a bustling one
- within 30 minute drive to work in downtown JC
Thanks for the replies.
Any idea whether the rental requirements around there match those in NYC (have to make x40 the annual rent, etc.)?
Also, he's been focusing mainly of zillow.com and craigslist, are there any Jersey-specific sources he should look into? Is it possible to find a decent place without a realtor?
If he's looking to drive to JC and wants a 30 minute or less commute, he might check out Bayonne, Rutherford, Seacaucus, Lyndhurst, maybe West or South Orange, Edison, etc. If he's driving right during rush hours, traffic might get nasty but it really just depends on where he'd be coming from. Leaving 30 minutes early could solve some of that, or if his office allows flex hours (going an hour early and leaving an hour early).
I lived in JC for a year and did a reverse commute and I left home at 6:40 and got home at 4 or so.....although the opposite side traffic was heavier, it wasn't too bad at those hours.
