So it's a slow day here, and this absolutely unimportant thing pops into my head... has anyone noticed that new NJ plates feature two different fonts? The first set of letters/numbers are a rounded, more modern looking font, while the second set are the traditional angled font that NJ has used for a bajillion years? I know the plates now feature flat letters/numbers for ease in printing/cost savings, but what is up with the two fonts? Anti-counterfeiting strategy (good luck), or something else?

I haven't noticed this.

I even tried looking it up. Sorry OP, not sure what you mean. Maybe you could post a picture as an example? It appears the different fonts are in the "New Jersey" and "Garden State" but they've always been different. The number/letters combo looks like the same font all the way through.

Here's an example from Wikipedia:

The numbers are smooth, and not angled like the letters. The fonts really aren't that different I guess, but there is definitely a variation. I'm just wondering why...

The letters are a bit more bold. You noticed that? I must have been a really slow day.

I've seen the new license plates before, but I've never really paid attention to the differences.

I'm sorry to contribute 9 years after the fact, but I actually have an answer for you! The numerals are in a more rounded font and alpha characters are in a more square font to help in distinguishing between the two and in rapidly/readily identifying license plates. You're not crazy, this is a real thing!

it probably has something to do with the scanning of the license plates to make it easier for cops to issue you tickets and make money which the police desperately need to serve and protect. my recommendation is to make sure you “click it or ticket”
