We moved to Myrtle Beach, SC (Carolina Forest Area). I do like it here, the weather is great, we have a brand new house, taxes are low, car ins. is low. We have been here since March 2007.
I have to tell you I do miss NJ very much. I miss the food, my family and friends. We only lived about 20 minutes from NYC and I miss that. Not that we went alot, but knew it was there.
Hi,
We moved to Indiana about 1 1/2 years ago. At first we loved it but now that we are here and settled in we are really missing NJ.
There is really nothing wrong here but miss the food, friends and family.
Good luck with your decision but just make sure it is truly what you want.
Left to Dallas for three years and could not wait to leave. Moved to Cary, NC and absolutely love it here. Yes, we miss some things about NJ, primarily family, then culture and proximity to Manhattan. But, not too big of a deal since we only got the family into the city a couple of time per year anyway.
stmaarten: thanks for the link. I did the quiz and it gave me a few things to check out. Little Rock, Arkansas (know nothing about Arkansas except the Clintons hail from there lol)...a few spots in Georgia, N. Carolina, and of course So. California came up. Will look it over some more.
Rapture, thanks for your post and advice. I have visited Columbia, SC and it was quite a culture shock for me! $600.00 in taxes sure sounds good though. Do you feel you stand out there (ie everyone refers to you as Yankee)..or are the people accepting? That is something I worry about in regard to moving anywhere.
BobKovacs, thanks for the post. I will look up Holly Springs for sure. How is the temperature in the winter there? I didn't even realize Ga. got any snow lol. 1/2" that's gone by morning is nothing, but I had no idea. Good to hear you found bagels, pizza and taylor ham lol. I could live on all three items..but could live without them too! I will ask you the same question I asked Rapture, are the people accepting of you and your fam?
Though I have seen much of the country from traveling through it, it doesn't give you a picture of how it is to live there of course. That can even be said when moving to a different town in NJ, so it is daunting. I have to admit to thinking most of the country listens to country music and focuses on church. Narrow-minded thinking on my part, I know...I am sure it can't be like that everywhere....and hey that is great if you like it, but it's not for me.
GJM, Myrtle Beach is such a pretty area. I would definitely be more interested in a coastal area if possible. How are the schools and the people? Are they accepting of us northerners? I grew up 30 min. outside of nyc so I can relate to location. I will look up your area too. This may be an ignorant question...but since it is coastal, do you get hurricanes?
Though of course I will miss my family wherever we go, I am no longer staying just for them. Half the people I know have up and moved out of state anyhow (mostly to Pa, which I am not interested in)...and I have learned that it is time to think about myself and my dh and kids, and not worry about everyone else. I don't have a ton of family here anyhow, so it won't be that hard. I am hoping my mother would relocate to where I go when she retires.
Hannahsmom - I hope you are able to adjust to your new spot. Good for you (and everyone else) for actually taking the leap and trying something new. You never know til you try...!
nic529 lol at your post. Even if the food isn't the same, I am sure all locations have their own food specialties that we could learn to love!
tbone65, good to hear you like your new area. I used and abused nyc in my younger days lol, and will not miss it at this point. Not being in a coastal area/living inland..is a hard thing for me to think about anywhere I go, but i am willing to try. Have you had an easy time adjusting? So many people from NJ have relocated to NC. I don't think it's for me, but you never know at this point. Does Cary have the year-round school like Raleigh does? I have really only looked into Charlotte, so I don't know much about the other areas.
We left NJ about 7 years ago but are moving back this summer...somewhere around NYC/NJ suburbs. The things you hate now will be the things you'll miss later. Traffic jams, crowds, waiting in line for everything, noise. They all add up to one word....energy! Places in the south don't have that energetic feeling...more of a lazy, laid back way of life. It's all in what you enjoy.
Moved from NJ to Georgia in August , don't like it at all, does'nt feel like south at all to me , heavy traffic, crime, people are cold, jobs hard to come by in my opinion.
what part of nj are you trying to leave?
we moved from nj to nc this past year, for all the same reasons you mentioned: stress, cold, tight budget.
we like it here a lot. there are things we miss, but dont really think about them as much. i feel more calm here, i get to stay home with my baby, and the weather does get cold, but not so much snow, which was always a cause of stress for me. i love it, its beautiful--but hate driving in it!!
but the area is very big so i was trying to figure out where you are now, and what would be comprable...
mr. man, where in Georgia are you? Sorry to hear you aren't happy. Sounds like you haven't been there too long, so maybe you just need some more time to adjust? Or maybe you'll be heading back home one day?
findinghope, I am in Monmouth County, not a rural part or anything, I grew up "up north" though. This was an adjustment for me in itself! Though it has pretty much has all the amenities up north had to offer since they have added so much over the past 10 yrs or so. What part of NC are you in?
1luvvt, I find it hard to navigate everywhere that isn't rt. 9 or 1 lol...so where are you now, back in NJ or another location?
