Days away from closing... One of my first orders of business is to get the internet set up. I'm going from Fios to Optimum.

1. General information on Optimum? How is it? I haven't had cable internet in a LOOOONG time.

2. Do any of you use your own modem/router? Any issues? I don't want to pay $10+taxes per month for something I can purchase for $110 once.

Thanks in advance.

Can’t speak to the first, but I always buy our cable modems.

Two reasons (aside from not leasing from them)
1) quality seems better

2) stand alone modem allows you to attach to (significantly) better wifi, not the junk they include with the “all in one” setups.

I was going to purchase an all in one. You think I should avoid that?

I've owned my own router/modem for over 10 years. Never looked back.

Has your original purchase held up?

Personally I’d avoid. The new tech in mesh wifi routers blow these out of the water. Night and day difference in speed and features (i.e. device priority, setting up guest network).

Don’t get sticker shock until you review a bit. Performance matches price.

We have this cable modem, and google wifi but there are other options.

I don't mind spending the money upfront, but if I am getting into the realm where it's 3 years worth of renting to get ahead of the game, the quality and improved performance really has to shine. Much faster? better wifi coverage throughout the house?

I had a pretty bad experience with optimum, cablevision, altice or whatever they’re calling themselves these days. I quickly switched back to Verizon where I’ve had no issues

My experience is that it’s much faster, especially at the edges of your property. This is due to the mesh function that basically sends the signal to the other access points and then to your decide. I’m not an expert, so that may be slightly off. I can tell you that I’ve never had better signal or coverage.

Here is a decent review but there are a lot more. Also keep in mind there are other routers but I’m completely sold on the mesh function.

It has. No issues at all. It's a Netgear.
