Young IT Professional in my late 20's from NYC (Uptown Manhattan) looking for areas to avoid in NJ, or perhaps areas/neighborhood to consider near South Bound Brook/Somerset border. Trying to avoid places with high flood potential & high crime, since I don't want to be worried about driving home after midnight.
I am currently commuting 100 miles roundtrip to work in SouthBoundBrook/Somerset Border and have decided its too many miles, tolls, and gas back & forth to NYC.
Unfortunately, don't know much about Central NJ but I do have family in Hackensack/Teaneck/Paramus.
I am trying to find somewhere rather under 30mins of commute to work on the West side more towards/closer to 287/78W rather than i95.
I have been searching on Trulia and Craigslist a bit, and have noticed some interest in Rooms to Rent that have or are almost furnished, good price with utilities included(maybe a good way to start out) but trying to keep the roommates to a lower number since i've heard horrible stories about living in a household with more than 2 roommates.
You might consider Morristown. There seems to be a younger "scene" there lately. Some have likened it to Hoboken. It also has the train to NYC, should you need that (weekends, for example).
It would be a roughly straight shot on I-287 to Bound Brook/Somerset. Just beware that 287 gets jammed in places.

Yes I thought about Morristown when I looked at the map and indeed 287 is big on traffic 7-8am but I noticed its mostly getting closer to the Perth Amboy and traffic gets bad about 1-2 miles before Exit 12 (my exit), but good thing my schedule will be changing to 10-6.
Thanks

Somerville and Bridgewater are safe towns right off of 287. Some areas of Somerset can be nice. There's really not many places in the area that I would be worried about driving home after midnight. New Brunswick maybe and parts of Franklin.

Actually, the vast majority of Somerset is very nice.
Only a small section adjacent to New Brunswick--and probably no more than 1.5 sq miles in area--is unsafe. When you consider that Franklin Township encompasses 47 sq miles, having a "bad" area of less than 2 sq miles is really insignificant for the people in the bulk of the township.
Franklin Township includes Somerset, East Millstone, Blackwell's Mills, Franklin Park, Pleasant Plains, Griggstown, Little Rocky Hill, Middlebush, and part of Kingston,, but most of the township is considered to be the ill-defined "Somerset", and that place name was actually invented by the US Postal Service in the 1970s.
There are two large, recently-built rental developments on Pierce Street in Somerset, and both would be--literally--just a few minutes from the OP's work location.

The whole area is nice I would just try to get as close to work as possible to cut down the commute time.

Very good point, I wouldn't mind something near 287/78W as long as I'm under 30mins from work.
I've been looking mostly at room rentals and house sharing, but most in the area of central nj are charging $900+ utilities = $1000-1200 is that a bit much ? Last time I checked that was Bergen County prices but not sure these days.
Looks like it will be hard to find a roommate where we both have privacy and it looks like most specify no sleepovers (guess my gf can't stay over) .. Will start looking on trulia and zillow for foreclosures now.
