I went to Spring Lake beach last week. It was sunny, hot and low humidity, nearly perfect day. Everything was fine until around 4pm when some black flies start to attack me. The bite was so painful, like pinching pain. The black flies were so aggressive and kept attacking despite me swinging the towel around me. This was the first time I encountered this pest on NJ beaches. Are they sand flies? Any insect repellent works on them?

Depends which way the wind blows. Sometimes a west wind will blow flies in from marshy areas. Skin So Soft can help

if there is a west wind, it will bring the flies in, they will make it so miserable most people will leave beach,
I tried using "deep woods off" that I had with me and it made no difference, when I got to beach I was wondering it was so empty and it was a nice day.

I looked it up myself, there are some products sold on amazon for biting flies, "cactus Juice" is one of them but I do not know if they actually will keep flies away.

Yeah like others have been saying this happens when the wind blows west off the bay. In my experience it's rare but this summer it seems to be happening more than usual. More often than not at the beach, any beach, the wind blows off the ocean but not always.

We get those at the beach on Long Island too. Usually late August/early September. As others said, it depends on the wind. They will be there one day and gone the next.
