For the most part landscaping is unskilled labor with little to no training required.

Definitely shop around, because some people do try to rip you off as much as they can.

Recently i was shopping around to get some carpentry done at my home. Got two quotes, $800 and other $2,200. It's around 6 hours of work.

i mean what the hell is the world we live in? I see people waiting 1/2 hour at a Costco Gas station so they can save $3 on gas, and burger king workers making $8 per hour while these handymen getting away with $200/hour work?

I agree with previous comment that we need more kids skipping out on colleges and just become blue collar workers, they will have more success in life.

I am going to learn how to do handy man work, it's not rocket science.

The same thing happened to me when I had my driveway repaved a few years ago. I had quotes ranging from $850 to over $3,000 for the same job. I guess most people don't shop around and that's how these companies get away with charging exorbitant amounts of money. These high end guys would be out of business (or at the very least forced to lower their prices).

Plumbers have never been cheap. Why more kids don't do that for a living is beyond me. You can always wash your hands, and throw your clothes in a washer you know. So that price doesn't shock me. I paid nearly that 20 years ago for less work.

What kills me is the guy that comes to trim my shrubs. He did it for $40 just 5 years ago. Last trip? Same shrubs? He insisted on $175! 3 hours work. Almost $60 an hour to trim shrubs. Quotes from others are the same. You got your service economy - now these unskilleds want to get paid like a plumber.

Indeed, plumbing is a licensed profession which means it takes a lot more risks legally. Someone screws up your lawn, you let it grow out and try again in two weeks.

Someone puts the wrong size main in and floods the basement with sewage? Lawsuit.

I'll ask again, what would you consider a reasonable price?

A lot of people here clearly don't know how business works and don't know what it takes to run a legitimate business.
