I was just trying to return some baby formula by ShopRite that NJ law prohibits them accepting return for baby formula. This is the first time I heard of it.

I Then look up their own return policy and didn't say anything about not accepting return for baby formula.

As far as I can tell there's only a law if you bought the formula with government assistance checks.

Return Policy – ShopRite

They only address returning formula w/o proof of purchase (it can be exchanged)

I see the same thing. They would only exchange it if you don't have the proof of purchase, but nothing stated in their policy cannot be returned. Or there is a link to a NJ law which the clerk claimed prohibits her from take it back.

I was told this as well at my Shoprite as well. A few years ago, my son transitioned to milk and I had loads of unopened formula left. Tried to return and was told for all baby food, including purees, a receipt is required for all returns/exchanges. They can't even do exchange without receipt because the government check only is for a specific brand/type (e.g. for Enfamil Infant the yellow one). The policy is to prevent people using government checks to buy one kind and then exchange it for the sensitive or Similac. They were nice enough to look up my receipts by my Price Plus card and accepted about half of them.

I casually asked at another store about their policy and was told the same thing so it seems to be a supermarket wide policy, not location specific.
