Hi, I am looking to purchase a home. I noticed new brunswick has homes for sale within the limited budget I set. Specifically I was looking at the units at Renaissance station. How safe are they? How safe is the city? I was a student there at one point in time but I stayed on Busch campus mostly and rarely ventured to New Brunswick. I am not a city person but i am looking for a reasonably safe home. I visited the area and all I can see so far is that there seems to be a large population of people from Hispanic or Latin descent.

I went to Rutgers in the early 2000's, and while I wouldn't call New Brunswick a safe city, but not super dangerous either, though I haven't been in there in a while. I never felt unsafe in college, but I was also an ignorant college kid always surrounded by friends. Would I live there now as a single guy? Maybe. Would I live there as a single woman? No way in hell.

Rapes were a big problem when I was down in New Brunswick, and my sister's house did get burglarized and actually shot once (the bank robbers were aiming at police, not my sister's house, but stray bullets hit it).

Where exactly are these units located? If you're close enough to the college campuses you might be alright. That being said, unless you NEED to live in New Brunswick, there are nicer places to live in the surrounding area. Somerset, Highland Park, etc.

I actually lived in a nice apartment complex near the Livingston Campus in Highland Park my senior year.

Also, there's a thread about this specific place here: //www.city-data.com/forum/new-j...wick-good.html

Thanks. the neighborhood is between commercial and remsem ave, just beyond sandford. I was only interested in the neighborhood because of price, size, and personal parking. Most areas I have looked at nearby offer street parking or parking spaces in lots. It seemed that these units were priced low so i was concerned that maybe it was due to safety issues.

I haven't been a student at Rutgers in 10 years, but Commercial Ave still conjures up bad images. Maybe someone else with more recent living experience can chime in, but I know that used to be considered a very undesirable part of town.

I was born and raised in the outskirts of New Brunswick, lived in the suburban developments off Rt 18 until I was 17 years old. I never really ventured into the "city" part as a young child but frequented it more as I grew older. It definitely is safer today than it used to be (being white I was always a minority at school as you would guess - not to sound racist, you mentioning the large hispanic population already). Typically the better parts of the city are around the Rutgers Campuses and are pretty much occupied by college students. Commercial Ave and its surrounding streets is still seedy, but it has seen worse days IMO. It is a city, but it is not like Newark or a similar place.

I live in Renaissance Station now and my fiancee has lived there for the last 3 years with no safety issues. Sometimes random people walk through but we've never seen or heard of anyone being harassed or robbed or anything like that in our time there. The area had a bad reputation 10 years ago but the demographics of the entire city have changed quite a bit since then.

I no longer recognize my hometown. It's like the entire population has turned over. I thought about returning to begin the gentrification process, but then I realize it's only a stupid dream.

Default Renaissance Condos

Hey original poster, i know it's been years but did you purchase a place there? Or did you decide on somewhere else. I'm currently looking at the area now and I'm getting mixed reviews.
