Ok, Tahiti,

Because I like you, I went into my filing cabinet and went back to June of last year, my water for June (one month) was 151 bucks. It went down in July but back up to 160 in August. Also, the 62 dollar gas bill was for February, not March. My January gas bill was 108. It begins to warm up here in Februrary, as opposed to late March in NJ. Our December bill was also quite high, it was 116. November was only 48. I wrote down all these figures on a piece of paper so I can post them here. My wife said something in the order of "what in the hell are you doing?" while I was writing them down.

Default Heating Horror

Just paid $338 for 100 gallons. Have a $340 unpaid bill for another 100 gallons.

In the past month and a half, paid more then $800 for heating oil. This is insane.

About 3200 Square Feet with 2 story Kitchen - Last PSE&G was $448 down $4 from the last bill. It is just me and my husband and we don't have children yet and we are almost never home... It stinks!

2000sq ft house. My electricity bill has been around $200 month. I ahve no idea why it went up so much since we are using less electricity than last year.

Heating bill- that's a joke! I have oil heat and we go through 200 gallons in 4 weeks in the winter. So far, I have spent $2400 since Nov on oil. It used to cost me $1200 for the whole year. I am married with three teens.

I purchased my current house a few years ago. 2600 sq ft. The house had electric only when we moved in. I since put in a gas line but it has been for cooking only up to this point. Our winter bills have been over $700/month and then have gone down to $450 during the summer. I would like to kick the idiot who put a heat pump in a larger house in NJ!
Last summer I put all new Low E windows hoping to decrease our utility bills, but this year they are just as high (maybe $100/mo cheaper than last year). The house in only 25 years old and seems to be well insulated.
Any suggestions to decrease our bills?
We are thinking about adding a gas furnace to supplement the heat pump but I don't have the extra $$ right now for that expense. It sucks to see that much money go down the tubes and our house does not even feel comfortable. I keep the thermostat at 68 and down to 65 at night.

My house is 40 years old. A few years ago, I replaced all the original single pane glass windows with triple pane low E windows. It did not make a difference at all in our heating bill. I keep the heat at 62 at night ( I like being cold) and at 65-68 during the day. I am always cold in my house. I would love to switch to natural gas but there is no gas line on our street.Only solution I guess would be to move. But, on the positive side, I just bought a hybrid vehicle so I will be saving on gas.

Keep the thermostat at 65 or below. Make sure furniture isn't blocking the registers or returns. Sometimes it cannot be helped. Definitely invest in a high efficiency gas furnance. Mine is a Bryant High Efficiency unit but it must be about 15-20 years old and surely not as efficient as the ones made today. Including Dec, Jan and Feb, my last three PS&G bills average out to be about $280/month which I don't think is too bad, but I don't have a huge house. Natural gas prices are up from last year but not nearly as much as oil. I feel sorry for those folks!

keep thermostat on 65 during day..no one is home about 68-70 at night
use only cold water for laundry unless it's sheets & towels, whites

we do have new roof, siding & windows so i think that has helped

well & septic so bill there
garbage done by town
Why keep the thermostat at 65 if no one is home?
