I was there a few times and even seen in the news, crime has picked up there. It hasn't gone down in the gutter yet but there's the quality of life crime I'm seeing. I went to Shoprite, I have never seen a full-time police officer inside Shoprite, I read that many NY and NJ criminals often go to Shoprites and make large thefts of razors, baby formulas, and medicines. Woodbridge mall had a few scares in the past with thefts and standoff.
We were in Macy's and my son pointed out to me and said some kids were stuffing clothes inside their jackets. I told him never to report this stuff to police or others, tell me 1st or else you may risk getting hurt by bad people.
Woodbridge Mall has its seedy crowd and its had it for quite a while. Other malls have a similar rough crowd that I notice too. Still a better mall than the (very ghetto) Quakerbridge outside Trenton or the (dead) Burlington Mall for example. I find it rather interesting that all the criminals convicted of something in Woodbridge are from somewhere else. People go to that mall from all over. It's at the merge (or split) of 1&9 so it's not out of the realm of possibility that they'd shoot down that way from Linden and similar type areas further north. Seriously, it's a town of 100,000 people where all the major roads in the state meet! You don't think people end up there from all over? I know people who live there and they've all had good experiences. I've spent a lot of time there and never had any problems. Spent most of my NJ life living one town over from it so I know it well and really do not see anything wrong with it.
So I'm going to be blunt here: I live in Cranford, really nice town, and I am recently divorced and my ex-wife is thinking of living (with my daughter) in Linden. Now, I'm sure there is a "nice" part and all, but everything I've ever seen and heard myself or secondhand about Linden makes me believe it is mostly a hellhole ghetto, and that at some point, my daughter would be going to school with the kids from the crappy, criminal parts of town. Now, if I'm wrong about this I'd like to hear why, but I'm not looking for "it's a multicultural tapestry!" as a reason, I'm more looking for "My tiny white daughter isn't going to be in danger every day of her life in this place." I know some people are going to be offended by this, but I think any parents reading this can appreciate that I'm more concerned with my daughter's safety than people's tender sensibilities. Thoughts?
Linden is fine. It's a lot of functional immigrants such as Haitians and Asiatics who avoid the welfare system like the plague. Relax!!

I certainly hope she didn't move there. Everything you said is accurate. I'm currently on Zillow everyday looking at Cranford and Clark. My son is white and small. I hear you.
A good friend of mine, about 40 y/o born and raised in Linden currently living in Long Valley, wouldn't event think of moving back much less raising his children there.
It's like a step up from Newark or Elizabeth but definitely a step down from Clark, Cranford, Westfield, etc.
