i completely recognize that it's a shorter route through jersey, no matter how you slice it.
however, i'm a d.c. commuter, and it's not at all uncommon to "lose" up to an hour to rush hour traffic over even just 50 miles of road. i.e. i can drive to my office in d.c. at 10 a.m. in about 50 minutes. that same trip will take 1:40 during rush hour.
but what i'm hearing from you guys is that the jersey rush hour isn't that bad...which feels like a big leap of faith. :-P
To the original poster, where in Vermont do you have to drive to? For instance, White River Junction is on the eastern border with Lebanon New Hampshire, which would necessitate different directions, than say, a destination to Burlington, which then would entail going up 87, straight shot from Suffren.
yikes. that is SOOOO out of the way. the turnpike isn't that bad to justify going that far west. you can always take 295N once you get into NJ and bypass the turnpike until exit 7. 295 parallels the turnpike and is less crowded (and free). just hop back on the turnpike around exit 57 (on 295).
eta - take the turnpike to exit 10 which is 287 and take that north into NY to I-87. exit 7-10 on the tkpe going north during rush hour shouldn't be TOO bad - it's mostly going south.
Tahiti - During rush hour, 295 is actually MORE crowded than the turnpike in the Philadelphia Area. The 42 interchange is a nightmare and there is hardcore construction on 295 in Gloucester County now.
I would not go through PA. PA highways are pretty crappy.
thanks for the replies. as for CT, it's not even on my route.
here's a recommendation that i got from someone who lives in NE PA and does a good bit of skiing in new england:
I-81 > I-78 east > 287 north > 87 north
that route is only about 35 miles longer than the jersey turnpike route and completely avoids the rush hour traffic i'll be facing through philly, 95, the turnpike, newark, etc.
any other thoughts on this option?
thanks!
Correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't 287 pretty nasty in the Morristown/Parsippany area during rush hour? I don't think you would save anytime going this route.

i'm mostly worried about the stretch between philly and say, edison. i'd likely hit the delaware memorial bridge around 5-5:30...which is why i'm looking for a way to avoid that stretch.
if i go the route through pa on I-78, i wouldn't hit morristown until after 8:00...hopefully no rush hour impact at that time, right?

i'm going just south of rutland...which is near the ny state line, so everyone i've talked to said 87 is what i want.

You will be fine on the Turnpike from the Del Mem Bridge to Edison. As I mentioned before, there may be slight congestion between exits 7a and 8a but it definitely will not be a 30min delay barring any accidents. Take the direct route - you will be fine.

Oh yeah, so you are going to go through Glens Falls, then Whitehall on US 4. (One of my very favorite and very underrated areas, if it weren't for that weather) In that case Turnpike to 7A, then West on 195 to 295 north, turns into 95 south, get off exit 4, Rt 31, 31 north to Flemington, then 202 north to 287, 287 to Suffren, to 87 North. You'll be good to go. As for Tahiti, I have to agree with the other poster about 295, normally would recommend it over the Turnpike, but the interchange at 76 during that time of day is going to be very bad. It's better to stay on the Turnpike. You'll be gaining lanes (from 2 to 3 after Exit 4) instead of losing them.

nasty? i wouldn't go that far. typical rush hour traffic. it's not like 80 west or tpke south for instance. also, i saw the OP wants to get to the Del Mem Bridge around 5pm, so he'll be fine by the time he gets to the Morristown, Parsip area.

But Jerzboy, using the travelers timetable, they will driving through this area around 9pm. Traffic shouldn't be a problem by then.
