I drive through NJ maybe once a year, and I used to always fill up at a rest area on NJ Tpk because prices were cheaper than MD, DE, NY. But when I drove through very recently, it was $2.66 at Sunoco at the Joyce Kilmer rest area. It's cheaper in the rest of NJ.

Are all the NJ Tpk rest area gas stations similarly expensive relative to the rest of NJ?

Any gas stations just off NJ Tpk that are cheaper than the rest area gas stations?

Captive audience. A lot of people won't get off the Turnpike for gas, so why not make them pay for the convenience?

Cheap gas can be found just off of the southern end of the Turnpike in the Carneys Point area.

This link explains how fuel prices on the Turnpike and Parkway are set, and what the current price is:
Fuel Prices

The current price on the Turnpike is $2.609

According to gasbuddy.com, the current prices around New Brunswick (I just picked a spot in the middle of the state) range from $2.33 - $2.89: https://www.gasbuddy.com/home?search=08901

Through travelers get stung. Local gas stations 2.35 and you can find lower.

I noticed that High falutin areas like Bernardsville rt 202, charge 50 cents higher a gallon than stations 15 minutes away.

Surely someone has a convenient cost vs distribution rationale for high gas prices in specific areas.

I have noticed the only time those stations are cheaper is when gas everywhere else goes higher and they haven't caught up yet. They only change price once a week maybe on Fridays so that's it.

Those places are higher in PA, too. As pcity said, you're a captive audience.

That's not the place to gas up.

One other "rule" actually some law in NJ,,, NJ does not allow gas clubs,, what that means is in NJ you, anyone can buy gas at Costco, BJ's, Sam's Club and similar gas stations WITHOUT any membership card.
They do not ask for it in NJ. I've been doing that for years, BUT none of these take cash. You have to pay with a debit or credit card.

Often these stations are lowest priced in NJ and quite popular too. If you notice no one ever asks for a membership card in NJ when you buy gas, I guarantee that ,,, just no cash.
