Hit or miss situation. Reports of seals pop up every spring in creeks from Cheesequake to Sandy hook/Spermacetti cove. Have to find them where they are. whales and dolphins in Raritan Bay as well.
that is the way it is with wildlife. snowy owls all over this year, have yet to see one.
social media is your friend along with a fast car.
Anybody got idea for best spot to see seals on jersey shore?i visited today sandy hook but out of luck.
The Jersey Shore Hurricane News Facebook page often posts seal and other types of wildlife sightings. Friends of Island Beach State Park does the same though I’m not sure how often, if ever, seals are in that area but there are other animals they post about. There are some other local Jersey Shore pages on social media that will do the same if you just do some searches. The most seem to be in Sandy Hook from what I come across.
I just checked out of curiosity lol and there are definitely seals that show up in Island Beach. Friends of IBSP and the IBSP FB page both have posted about it so you can definitely follow them as well!
wtf?! we have seals now?! Great whites can't be far behind
We already have them. A few years ago there was an injured seal on the beach at Long Branch. The marine life rescue place was called in Brigantine, and they came and got them. Because I was concerned about what happened to the seal, I Googled a few days later and found that this was the third seal in the area who had apparently been bitten by an adolescent great white who was moving up from smaller fish to seals but couldn't quite fit them in its mouth yet.
The seals were being brought to Brigantine to be fed food and antibiotics until they recovered and then were released. By then, I imagine, the great white was old enough to eat them.
I spend a lot of time at shore and have only witnessed a seal once, seals are a rare sight at jersey shore.
