i live in a bi level house. when ever the washer (downstairs0 or the bath tub(downstairs) empty the pipes groan. this just started. been in the house for 15 years. i think it a vacuum problem but am not sure. and if so dont know how to fix it. could it be the check valve going bad?

Im thinking that sounds more like a clog somewhere to be cleared out. The drains go down but air vents are the other way, up to the atmosphere, roof vents.

Yeah, especially then. The system has to vent from above to ensure the pump doesn't create a vacuum inside the house. Go look at your roof and find a pipe sticking up about 18".

If you don't have any roof vents in your plumbing system I think I can tell you where the problem is...
