We will be moving to midtown NYC from CT and looking to rent into Woodbridge, Avenel or Rahway. We are a family of 3 - the kid is 18 mos. I will be working in midtown (37th street & 7th ave) The max. rent we are willing to pay is $ 2300 and ~1hr commute.

If we go to Rahway - we will only consider Riverplace apartments only, similarly if we choose Avenel - we will only consider Station Village at Avenel. In Woodbridge, we have looked at Woodbridge Center plaza and are generally find it okay.

Any thoughts on the above choices? Our criteria are safety, commuting time reliability to NY Penn Station, kid friendly parks and other activities.

If I had to choose it would be Avenel or Colonia over Rahway and Woodbridge.

Not certain if Avenel train station has as frequent service as Rahway, I would check that first as Rahway is directly on the main line.

Rahway is better but the OP has kids, you sure you wanna bring your kids to Rahway school?

The Iselin section of Woodbridge would be your best option as the trains to NYC are more frequent from the Metropark station. Plus Iselin has slightly better schools compared to the areas that you mentioned.

They’re looking to rent and the kid is 1 year old. Schools aren’t an issue yet. They have time to figure that out while enjoying an easier commute from Rahway in the near term.

Thanks for all your responses.

In the meanwhile - we have also looked at Secaucus (Xchange @ Secaucus) and have gotten really confused. With a <2 yr old, is Secaucus any better or worse than the previous options.
We would plan to live in this place for 2 years and then look to buy in a better school district.

In other words - What is is that we do we gain by moving to Woodbridge/Rahway/Avenel over Secaucus.

Thanks in advance!!

Secaucus is one stop away from Penn Station. That said, if you plan to rent for a couple of years; then this would be a great option. My suggestion is for you to rent in an area where you are planning to buy, just so that you can get a good feel about the township you'll be buying into.

While Secaucus is one stop from Penn, it is outrageously expensive to park and ride unless your spouse can drop you off or take an Uber which still costs about $4-8 to the station. Wanna park for $26/day at the station? There is zero parking lot close enough other than the overpriced lot.
