I just feel the need to vent after today. I guess you could say I'm fed up with Route 80. Doesn't matter the time of day, day of week, etc...Route 80 is the WORST highway in New Jersey. I sit in traffic the second I get on till the second I get off 80. I do not understand why there was so much traffic this morning going Eastbound. There were no accidents, just sun glare!!! I saw a State Trooper on the shoulder of the highway at the Rockaway Mall exit...he was asleep!!! I've had enough, I'm boycotting the highway. If you see a chubby guy riding a bike on the shoulder...it's me. Say hi.

I feel your pain, I drive 80 as well everyday and it was driving me insane to be stuck in traffic, so instead I decided to make my own hours, I leave my home at 5:30 am so I can avoid all that mess and to make it into the office in about an hour, but if I leave home say at 5:45 or 6:00, it can take me from 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours or more if there's an accident.

I remember one of the worst years of my life was spent traveling from Mount Arlington to Fort Lee. I remember where the kinks were in the road, at Exit 39, the 287 south ramp, again at West Paterson (Garrett Mountain sunglare during the fall was particularly tough) then the local/express split by the Parkway, then finally heading up the hill to the GWB. That was the year the temporary truss bridge had to be constructed in Denville because a truck fire almost melted the overpass. I had to drive through Marcella/Green Pond that morning and through the Split Rock Reservoir and then back down to Boonton that morning, to circumvent that disaster.

That commute was one of the many factors to make my fateful decision to relocate west. Some days I really miss NJ, but a story such as this harkens me back to those dark days!

Incidentally, this is the road I commute to work on now:

I haven't seen a traffic jam in over 3 years now. It's like this every day.

I remember that truck incident in Denville. It took them over three months to repair that part of Route 80. I drove from Rockaway to Denville daily those three months and it took me over an hour!

my husband drives 80 for about 35 miles each way and occasionally complains - usually only if there's an accident. he leaves around 6:30am.

i drive 80 on only weekends and it's never a problem.

What exit does your husband get on? 26, right? As you know, I left on Exit 30, Howard Boulevard. I left at 6:15. If I left at 6:30, a mere 15 minutes later, I'd be in a world of hurt. That extra 15 minutes was highly critical.

yup. he gets to 80 around 6:40 or 6:45am. it takes about 1 hr in total on a normal day (lately it's been about 45 minutes). sometimes he'll get caught up in the backlog due to the 15 merge, but it's not *that* bad.

if i had to say, his pm commute overall is worse than the am commute. he leaves at 4pm.

I forgot to ask... Where does he commute to? I had to drive to Fort Lee, which entailed several 'land mines' along the way. If your husband commuted to, say, Parsippany, then it's a whole different ball game.
