We are considering moving to Leonia primarily for nyc commute and decent schools. We have two kids, My wife is ethnically Chinese but grew up here and I am white. I came across a few old threads about palisades park suggesting that folks felt some tension between the Korean population and the rest of the population in that town. Do folks think the same dynamic exists in Leonia? Is it going to be harder to make friends there than, say, ridgewood or glen rock?
the koreans in pal park are very different from the koreans from other areas. the ones in pal park tend to be more recent immigrants. I never witnessed this tension in leonia and you can drive through leonia and see how the downtown is like. There is a korean influence, but that's also because they are more willing to open a small business. I don't think your kids would have a hard time making friends. You are not dealing with recent korean immigrants in leonia....they cant afford to live there. my son would always play the leonia park....never had an issue.
In the early 90s, or late 80s when the korean first taking over parts of Bergen, there was lots of tension. I a first hand witness to this. I dont know how much that is now with all the Liberalisms, and PC culture though. Best thing to do is go into town and hang out.
Feels like the bigger problem is just going to be finding a decent 4br house that is > 2500 square feet. Housing stock seems to be even more limited than what we have in Fair Lawn.
Yeah that's a lot of square footage for Leonia. Do you really need a house that large?
Maybe a town farther out in the 'burbs would have more of the large housing stock you want?

I have a wife, 2 kids and a mother-in-law that frequently stays at our place. Currently have an 1700 square foot house. Feels like we need something substantially larger.
My original plan was to find a place in Ridgewood, Glen Rock or Ho Ho Kus. I just found out about the weehawken ferry and was hoping to significantly cut my commute by finding a place in Leonia/using the ferry. The budget is there but, the housing stock is really thin.
its all about timing with the market, if you go to njmls.com and select sold , you will see on all the houses you missed out on.
