This has come up for me several times recently. Last week, the township was offering free bulk pickup on Saturday and Sunday (our condo association pays for its own garbage and recycling pickup, but you have to pay separately for bulk). You just had to get whatever it was you wanted taken out to the curb.

Well, that's the hard part. I'd been plotting and scheming to get rid of a dresser. I'd already thrown the drawers into the dumpster, removed the mirrors and threw out the frames (the mirrors are good, donating them to the church sale) and I was going to ask a friend to borrow her Sawzall to the cut up the dresser and put it piecemeal into the dumpster.

But they announced this bulk pickup, so I decided to get the dresser out to the curb. I shoved it a foot or so at a time, rested, came back to it, and over the course of a couple of hours got it out of the bedroom, through the living room, and out to the sidewalk where two neighbors who were talking saw me and picked it up and carried it the rest of the way to the curb. Of course, I would never ask neighbors to help me. I don't know them that well, and I know one of them is 65 and he has some physical difficulties.

So now I have a new problem that I can't possibly attempt to do myself. I have a full-size washer and dryer with the dryer stacked on top of the washing machine. I have a plumbing issue and called the plumber who looked at it and told me that I have to get someone to take down the dryer so he can get behind the washing machine and access the wall behind it and to call him when I've done that.

So who the heck do I get to take down a dryer? I asked a friend who said she would call someone she knows who has a youngish son, but this will take two guys to do. Mr. Handyman charges $160 for the first hour, and that seems like a bit much just to take down a dryer from on top of a washing machine.

I simply do not know any young, strong men. What do the rest of you do when you need something lifted or moved?

I actually thought of calling PC Richard, where I bought the dryer, to tell them it needed repair so that they would come and get it, but it works fine and I think they'll figure that out pretty quickly LOL.

I went thru a similar issue a few years back. Called the appliance store where I buy appliances. Asked if they had someone who could help me get rid of an old basement stove. They said they had a driver who did this work after his regular hours. He actually took the stove and sold it for scrap. Nice guy, gave him a $20 tip.

You may have to call around. Keep numbers when you find good workers as they do change jobs on a whim..

Hey, that's a good suggestion. Maybe I'll call the store where I bought the washer and dryer years ago and see if they have anyone like that.

Thanks.

In my neighborhood there is a Facebook group where people can ask for recommendations and there's always some youths or college kids willing to do this sort of work for relatively small amounts of money. We had to move a bed and a dresser from one of our spare rooms to our attic guest room and that cost us $40. (It was supposed to be $20, but we paid more because we're nice.)

i think for this you are probably best off just posting something on your local facebook group asking for some assistance. some mom will probably send over her high school aged son (and friend if needed) for a few bucks. any business is going to cost you more than you probably want to pay.

I'm not understanding what you guys mean by "local Facebook group". I am on Facebook, but I don't know of any sort of local group.

Cool, didn't know that. I will check.

Meanwhile, the friend of a friend just called and said she thinks her son and his buddy can do it tomorrow.

Good ideas, though. I am sure I will encounter this situation again. I am 6 feet tall and women in my family tend to be stronger than others--Mom is 90 and driving herself to dialysis 3X a week--but I'm past 60 now and I'm noticing I can't do what I could do ten years ago.
