we all pay into unemployment from paychecks. What you get from unemployment does not have to be paid back. in a way though you and all employees are paying it in advance to the state unemployment fund. Then some take out and others do not.
at least this is my understanding.
Exactly. I paid into unemployment my entire life, but I've never collected and never will. I'm fine with others being able to do so as need be. That's the way the world works.

I paid into the Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund for 37 years, but I never needed to collect even one cent from NJ Unemployment... Thank God.
I have been paying for car insurance for the past 51 years, but have never "collected" from it, simply because I haven't had even a scratched fender for 5+ decades. Should I start complaining about not having gotten any payments from my various insurance companies?
I think that a few people in this forum don't understand how insurance--of all types--actually works.
I got an email saying the $600 starts on the 10th. How long is the $600 for.
is it for the 3 months of extended unemployment or does it date back to equal all of the weeks of unemployment.
I got mine yesterday, was for 7 weeks. It started in March sometime, so it will date back to then if that's when your unemployment started. I exhausted my benefits 7 weeks ago, so mine was for the past 7 weeks. I have been in unemployment since October but started getting the extra $600 in March sometime. It ends at the end of July.
I've been collecting unemployment since the end of last year, my normal benefits recently ran out. My extra 600 deposits stopped with this. My normal payments have started back up through the emergency funding but I haven't received the 600 since before the interruption, about 3 or 4 weeks ago. Has anyone else experienced this and do the give you your back pay all at once since this benefit ends on the 31st of July?
I got mine all at once (7 weeks) last Friday, then the $600 for 7 weeks all at once yesterday.
All of it is taxable, both state and federal money (that $600 extra).
Come tax time states send IRS a 1099-G reporting benefits paid as *wages* which are fully taxable at both state and federal levels. You report UI income on your 1040 when filing yearly taxes.
Those receiving benefits can elect not to have federal and or state/local taxes taken out of their checks, or vice versa. People who don't will have to deal with things when the file their income taxes for year covering benefits.
Taxation on the $600 takes things down to around $540 or so which is still a nice bit of change, especially since it is free money. Those that don't take payroll deduction and rack up two or more weeks alone of pandemic unemployment assistance may find themselves in for a shock when filing 2020 taxes next year.
In case anyone has any bright ideas, don't even think about not reporting UI/PUA income. It is just like wages or other income reported to IRS, they know you got it and if your return doesn't mention it will be flagged.

How many weeks is the extra $600. I am guessing 13 weeks but really I have no information on how many weeks it is for.
At rate NJ is going many gig/self-employed/independent contractors who have filed but still are being jerked around likely won't start getting their $600 until later in June or throughout July. In an odd twist those entitled to back benefits *may* see themselves getting huge lump sums just as end or July rolls around.

Well it is for 13 weeks depending on when you exhausted. If your 13 weeks extension started on June 1, you won’t get 13 weeks of extra $600 because that benefit stops at the end of July. So that person would only get 8 weeks of extra $600 even though they’ll get 13 weeks of extended unemployment.

For my unty
she is also getting state UI + $600 /week as well..
But her office is getting open , 2 days /week , may be 16hrs/week (full time 40 hrs/week)
what we are going to do take next step though , if runs her payroll , after join , still she will get same UI + 600 right?
Please advise , will she needs to inform to the state gov ..?
There is option , if reduced hours by employer OR reduced hours by employee ..still eligible/continue
getting the unemployment insurance right?
Thanks once again
