I am going to go to school at Columbia University and am looking for a place that is up to an hour away but is close to a major aiport cause I have to travel for work quite a bit. Am single/28, so I am looking for a place that has good nightlife but is not too expensive to rent an apartment and last but not least is a safe neighborhood. Can anyone recommend any really cool places to live? Thanks.

if I were you I would live in the dorms or other housing offered by the school, or if not school housing find a cheap share and be close to everything, school, airports and nite life
Montclair might suit you...alot of young professionals and college students - also has a direct line into NYC (Train) and it's only 30 mins or so from Newark Airport.

If I were you I would look for a share near the University. You could try the Village Voice or NY times to look for shares.
If you qualify for subsidized graduate student housing off-grounds, take it! I know someone who went to Columbia and got into a shared 2-BR apartment for about $1000 each. It's a steal. The housing is near the university and the M60 bus to LaGuardia (and cabs to LaGuardia or JFK aren't too expensive from Manhattan).
If you're just not into NYC and want to live in Jersey, I'd say go with Hoboken or Jersey City. They have the nightlife you're looking for, lower rent than Manhattan at market rate, and you can take the PATH train to Manhattan and switch to the subway for a long schlep up to Morningside Heights on the 1 train.
A little bit cheaper, and quieter, is the Fort Lee area. You can catch a bus that zips across the GW Bridge, and then you can transfer to the 1 train for a shorter subway ride from there.
