Can someone please explain this? It comes from State of NJ-Motor Vehicle commision.

Vehicles exempt from sales tax

Exemption #7 – You bought or registered the vehicle in another state while you were not a resident of New Jersey.

I am buying car in Georgia (been in Atlanta for 2 years for my study) and will be registering it in NJ, where I am relocating for work. I am confused about paying sales tax. Any help is appreciated.

If you buy in Atlanta while a resident of Georgia, you don't pay the sales tax in NJ - you'll just have to pay in GA. You have to buy before you move to NJ.

That's correct...just to make it clear the important point is ..while a resident of Georgia . Just because you're going to school in GA and been there for 2 years does not in and of itself make you a legal resident of GA.

Whatever is cheaper/most convenient for the guy. I am pretty sure that if he titles it in GA, he will not have to pay NJ sales tax.

Thanks for all the responses.
1. GA does have sales tax as mentioned earlier, State:4% + 2-3% local
2. Since I am international student I am on "Non-resident alien" status. So, I am not GA resident. That was a good point.
3. I don't see any difference in sales tax rate between GA and NJ. So, I was thinking to register my car in NJ itself to avoid the rework.

Please correct me if I am wrong or if anyone has better suggestions. Thanks again

how do you plan on getting the car to NJ without registering in GA if you buy it in GA?

I am getting a used car and I think in GA the plate remains on the car. Can I not put insurance, drive to NJ and register there? I am learning, so I don't know if it makes any sense

Yes, you can do that. You could tell the dealer in GA you are moving and they shouldn't charge you sales tax.
