The tax won't help. Smokers will still buy, they may buy less.
If politicians would get off their a@@es and help stimulate research and industry that would create a relatively safe alternative, or complete research into vaping.
We've known smoking has been deadly for 50+ years now, and they haven't been able to come up with an alternative that is relatively healthy in ALL that time? We have phones that can tell you the name of the song that's on the radio when 50 years ago you had to spin your finger 9 times around and a computer was the size of college fridge.
Not only would it save lives, you could make a lot of $ off something like that.
Another useful thing that could put people to work as well. It could almost be like the new coffee.
Unfortunately, politicians are a reflection of the voters who keep them in office and there are some really dumb and messed up people in this country. We ceased living in a free country years ago and this will only get worst. NJ voters are totally OK with freedoms being restricted and with paying sky high taxes to support the crooks in Trenton who then give the taxpayer hard earned money to scroungers and other parasites.

Smokers who live near Pennsylvania or Delaware will visit more often.
I suspect that there are people who are planning some sort of illegal cigarette thingy-bob.
It seems like a fairly painless way to raise revenue without affecting everyone, niche markets like smokers and gun permits are better than across the board property tax raises or higher gas taxes that affect everyone. Clearly the state lost tons of revenue while increasing spending for Covid, I don’t think there’s a lot of choices. When pot becomes legally hopefully in November that’s also a niche market that will be heavily taxed like gun permits. That one will affect me but again that seems more fair than across the board tax increases.

it may seem nice (especially to people who dont get hit with the niche group taxes) but im not sure why its really nice to extort money from specific groups of people for raising general tax revenue. i dont support any taxation but it seems like it should be fairly spread across the population, not targeting certain groups.
