Hello everyone! I’m looking to buy a SFH(min. 3BR/1.5BA) in NJ for under 400k. I’m looking for some recommendations on towns to look in. I work in Newark and I am willing to commute up to an hour(by car) but preferably less. My wife and I don’t have kids yet but schools are important. This is my first post, if there’s any more info I can provide to help, please let me know! Thank you in advance.

I was wondering myself about people paying 500k and up for houses,,, when a friend of a friend just posted a house her grandfather built in Ewing NJ for I think $185 or $189 K.

Ive never been to nor seen this house but to me its more realistic, but don't know any other details than whats listed.

I don't know much about Ewing but it's pretty far from Newark that house needs a ton of work.

OP, you need to list your priorities. Is a shorter commute most important? Nicer/bigger house? Good schools. There's a lot of options within 1 hr of Newark but without knowing what you value most it's hard to give good recommendations.

I'm pretty sure the original Saw movie was filmed there.

Hello HudsonCoNJ! I’d say schools/neighborhood would be the most important. As far as the actual home, we tend to lean towards ranch style homes and I think anywhere from 1,200-1,600 sq/ft is more than enough. I currently live in Sparta, and my commute after work can sometimes be up to 90mins, but generally its about an hour in the morning. I am trying to shorten that to a maximum of an hour including any rush hour traffic.
