you would think, sandwiched between NYC and philly, NJ would have better chinese food. Dim sum is hard to come by and every since cheng du 1 moved, its hard to find good szechuan.
I can not eat surburban chinese food. its disgusting.
SHan shan isn't too bad.
Qin dynasty is ok.
In the burbs or rural areas in the rest of the country, the chinese food is all buffets. Like Long Island. So many chinese buffets out there. Florida too, especially around Disney World

i don't like buffets except in vegas and may be AC
Have you been there recently? So I went when it first opened (ate there) and was impressed. A lot of people I know who used to go to the "old" Look See started going there. The second time I went, I bumped into a chef-friend of mine. Third time, same, all very, very good. Time went by, and I ordered in from there. Was not impressed at all. I thought, OK, takeout is not their thing, I'll just go back and eat there.
I went and it "slipped" -- it just wasn't as good as it initially was. So, I chalk it up as a one-off, and I go back. Same. It seemed like it "jumped the shark" so to speak. I tried take out another time or two, and ate there once again...but it just wasn't the same.
If you've been there recently, I'd like to go back (in the future). Thanks!
Yes, got food from them 2 weeks ago. Tasted fine to me. I heard they are under new ownership.
There was an authentic szechuan restaurant in Wallington which was so awesome but it closed before covid hit. Probably because residents of Wallington weren't ready for authentic szechuan. I forget the name of it but they had another location in NYC and were Michelin rated

It IS disgusting. It seems to all use the same base vegetables and sweet sauce and then they just throw in the last ingredients to try to make it appear like whatever you ordered.
I love kung pao chicken or shrimp in the city, but it is not supposed to have broccoli and carrots in it, for the love of God! That's what you get when you order it at most NJ places, though.

^^^^ I totally agree.
I don’t understand how we can be so close to NYC’s plethora of superb Chinese restaurants in all five boroughs, yet have so much horrible Chinese food just minutes across the river.

Broccoli and carrots in everything.
^^^^ Yep.
Even in towns with large Chinese populations (like Fort Lee) the Chinese food is bad.
I would love to know where the Chinese in NNJ go for good Chinese food, besides Manhattan and Queens.

Many--perhaps most--Caucasians are not aware that a lot of Chinese restaurants in NJ have two menus:
One menu for their Chinese clientele, and a totally different one for Gweilo
The menu for their Chinese clientele doesn't list such items as Egg Foo Yung or Beef with Broccoli, and most of the dishes on their "real Chinese" menu would be very... alien... to most whites.
When there is a "mixed" table of both Chinese folks and Gweilo, many waiters will ask (in Cantonese or Mandarin) which menus should be brought to the table. Only by going out to dinner with Chinese friends did I discover this reality.

I have heard about the Chinese vs. American menus, but didn’t realize it was so widespread. I don’t really care that much if the food is not 100% authentic. I just want it to taste good. I’m tired of the horrible tasting Chinese food I’ve been coming across.
