Nope. You can have your own router and if you have a smart TV you can down load the app and don't need a box.
i know about the router, that is what i did. not sure about the box. here is the line item relating to the box:
"DVR SERVICE + TV BOX
$17.50
Includes TV Box With Remote And DVR Service (HD Technology Fee Is Required And May Be Included In Your Video Package)"
so they link the box with DVR service. i dont know if the recordings are stored on the box or in the cloud, the TV is more my wife's thing i just try to minimize the expense. but if i got rid of the box, it would need to be stored in the cloud. id assume some of that fee will have to stick around.

Are you referring to Xfinity here? From what I’m reading online, xfinity is the only cable provider that will let you watch live tv through a smart tv or streaming device like Roku or Apple TV, allowing you to not need a cable box. I don’t think you can do this with Verizon. They have an app where you can watch tv but it only works on phones and tablets. I suppose you can mirror your phone to your tv but that’s not very practical to do 100% of the time.

thats how i have it with xfinity. i have one box and the rest of my TV's use either an app on the tv or a roku. i thought i needed to have one box but i could be wrong.
when i looked into changing to verizon fios, i learned that they require all tv's to have boxes which made it substantially more expensive so i stuck with xfinity. i pay about 167 a month for a triple play package.
i also called directv. i forget exactly what their deal was but it was so bad that i actually said to the salesperson "you actually sell service to people with those prices?"
