i never heard of having to pay more if you choose to go on a cashier line. Obviously this would be an individual store decision. Is there a store that is currently practicing this policy or is this just a drama post?
Regarding self checkout lines, of course this eliminates jobs, which is a bad thing. my wife won't even use self checkout because there is often an issue such as the computer freezing or requiring an employee to scan their own key anyway. Self checkout can make life easier if you only have a couple items and want to get in and out fast, but normally we need an employee to assist at some point for larger grocery purchases. There are more cons than pros for sure.
I can’t wait until the process becomes better because I’ve walked out of many stores because of long lines to pay. I don’t have the patience for it
Edit: A simpler approach that would accomplish the same thing would be to scan bar codes with our cell phones as we put them in our carts. Would be good for budgeting also.
The reason why retailers moved over bag your own is because of Murphy's minimum wage requirements makes it cost ineffective to have cashiers anymore. As minimum wage requirement continue to go up the next few years, I surely see this as plausible.
Wrong.
The reason why retailers are moving to the bag ban is because it is the law in NJ. It is the law in NJ because of a concern for the environment. It has nothing to do with minimum wage increases. https://amp.northjersey.com/amp/7192081001

What about those who don't own smartphones like my inlaws? Several seniors do not have access to this kind of technology nor wish to have it.
Hmm not sure. It may just be that stores want people to do it themselves now. It seems to be a trend that I see more now. I don't know how it would be a law. I prefer people be permitted to choose what they want and not be charged extra.
I started using my own bags when Covid-19 first came out and wiped them down when I got him. I stll use them and I much prefer my own. Except when I stop in at the store and forgot to put my bags back in my car then I can't stop off at the store anymore unless it's for something small.
In all honesty I think I am doing both, sort of. I trying to understand why people want to ring their own and don't complain the others prefer a cashier. I'm sure some people on the site know what I'm talking about.
So take away jobs. People warned raising the minimum wage would cause people to lose their jobs and sure enough that is what is happening. I suppose he doesn't care since our President Biden or Governor Murphy will allow them Government Assistance, unemployment, and so on. We will all end up paying more in the long run. Then why not stop having all services? like cut down on waiters, waitresses and just have one who stands there to refill the buffet style diner. There are places that do that when a large group go out for a special dinner. No more waitresses bringing the food to the tables. Now it's one room buffet and the customers bring their plate of food to their table.
Huh? No one is doing this to take away jobs.
Baggers aren’t exactly a huge percentage of the grocery store payroll. In fact many are developmentally disabled and the state encourages this type of employment through tax incentives. Maybe they’ll move over to bagging with the customers bags. Are you worried about cashiers losing their jobs from the bag ban?
Servers are paid less than minimum wage because of tips so that also isn’t the big payroll cost. And buffets are not so popular since covid- certainly no trend to move from regular service to buffet at least not in NJ.
I think you may be seeing a conspiracy when there is none.
Nj is expensive- minimum wage needed to be increased.
I use the self check out if I don’t have a lot of fruits and vegs that need to be weighed and looked up- I’m slower at it then the cashiers. It’s all about what is in my cart. If I have a lot of stuff that can’t be scanned it ends being faster to go through the cashier line.

LMAO..concern for the environment?? Really? If they really cared about the environmemt, we wouldn't see so many items made of plastic. News flash, plastic bags are 100% recyclable. This liberal law does NOTHING to help the environment. If anything, there will be more trash and litter in the streets because there will be no more plastic bags that can be used as small garbage bags. This "law" is just another way to control people and inconvenience us. Also, if you have groceries delivered, expect to find loose food packages and cans all over your front porch unless the bag ban doesn't affect online delivery.

Considering every grocery store around has signs up for help wanted at well above the minimum wage....nope.

So you do see a conspiracy when there is none. Got it it all about controlling residents - hahahaha!
FYI- plastic bags gum up the recycle machines. They may be recyclable- but not with current processes.
