Depends on your age, what you do for fun, and if money is the deciding factor.
Personally when we moved from NYC to Hoboken, it was pretty much a wash in the costs. Apartments were basically the same price. Hoboken ones were obviously bigger/nicer, but you also were spending more time in them, so it is kind of needed. The money we saved in city income tax went right to car payments/insurance (wife was staying home with the kid). Hoboken is nice place to go out if you do not go out a lot, but doesnt compare to living in the city. And honestly, if you want to meet friends in Manhattan a couple of hours after work, you are NOT going to do it. Once you go back to NJ, you are not going to go back into the city. It all depends on your wants/needs
If you're commuting to NYC for work 5 days a week, the bus and/or parking can get expensive. If you have a good job in NYC, it can still be worth it. But it's definitely a factor in your budget.
