Last night I had water seeping under the foundation into my garage. First time I've seen that since we moved 4 years ago. Thankfully basement still appears to be dry. My house sits on a slope and the garage is the lowest part of the house. I look out in my yard and there's puddles of water sitting in the grass in areas where there are depressions so I can only imagine how saturated the soil must be. We get the same amount of rain in the spring so not sure why I'm seeing this problem now. Could it be because it's winter and the trees and grass are dormant so they are not soaking up the water?
Morris County was a complete flood today, first time i've ever seen it like this. I've seen everything from retaining walls collapse to peoples driveways washed away. I was out in the rain at 4am cleaning out my gutters from leaves as they were overflowing.
Had to do some driving last night from Sparta through Wayne area. Businesses, homes, cars are underwater a over. Unsure how its not a state of emergency its the worst since Sandy.
We got water in our basement. Normally, 3.5" of rain is not enough to cause a problem. But coming on top of the 3" we got exactly one week earlier, it was a recipe for "groundwater intrusion". Remember the soil is cold and the top layer may even be hard, if not icy. That makes it harder for water to be soaked into the ground. So we still had big puddles from the first storm when the second storm hit. Which meant the water from the second storm was almost like getting 6.5" of rain. Ugh. But that's life in NJ.
That was a one of our top considerations when we bought our home. We looked long and hard to find a house that had minimal water issues. Flooding is only going to continue to get worse due to climate change.
